Why does your dog lean on you?

By Jerry Welsh

People would always want to have a dog for a lot of reasons. Some dog breeds are utilized to hunt, some are used in search and rescue operations, others are kept as protection dogs but majority of these four legged friends are primarily kept as companions. Apart from having an innate eagerness to please attitude, dogs are loyal and very protective of its people. Being social animals, dogs would always manifest its affectionate nature. Dogs are considered as members of the family because of these most valued human-like attributes.

Dogs may not have the ability to speak but nature has endowed these intelligent and affectionate animals with the ability to use a whole range of body movements to communicate with people and with other animals. Given a chance, dogs would always lean on their favorite people. To gain balance, a dog scratching its body would usually lean on the masters legs. On the other hand, a dog would lean on people not only to prop the body when scratching an itch. The dog's tendency to lean is basically a manifestation of its affectionate however, the attitude can also be a sign of the dog's dominant, possessive and protective nature.

Dogs will show their affectionate nature to all the members of the family as dogs are social animals. A dog would take every chance it could have to get close to its human family and once close, the dog would lean its body and give the person sloppy kisses. Dogs are said to be intelligent creatures but in spite of that fact, a dog would ignore the well padded comfortable bed and choose to sleep on the legs and feet of its master.

Dogs are possessive and dominant by nature and this behaviors are manifested when the dog leans on people. Dogs heightened senses makes them easily perceive danger. The dog would stand between the perceived danger and lean on the master's legs - ready to protect its favorite person. Due to the strong bond between master and dog, it is not surprising if the dog shows a possessive attitude. When the dog leans, it is telling everyone that the person it is leaning to is his master.

A dominant dog has the tendency to lean not only on people but on other animals as well. Being pack oriented animals; dogs would need to look up to a leader of the pack and when no one is assuming the position will try to grab the opportunity to take on a dominant role. A dog with a dominant behavior will be hard to manage and control. The affectionate personality that is manifested by the dog's tendency to lean is one of the reasons why dogs are highly valued pets but if leaning is done by the pet to be dominant then it is imperative for the behavior to be modified.
