American Foxhound - A Versatile Dog Breed

An American Foxhound's appearance is very similar to that of a Beagle. The dog generally stands between 21 to 25 inches and weighs from 65 to 75 pounds. The streamlined athletic body is thickly covered with a short fur that ranges in color from tan and white, red and white and the impressive combination of black, tan and white. Well boned, straight and long legs give this breed its legendary speed.

The American Foxhound is believed to be in existence in the Crown Colony - long before it was given the name America. This breed originated from the pack of English hunting dogs that was brought to the Crown Colony by Robert Brooke in 1650.

In its country of origin, these dogs were acclaimed for being excellent hunters. The British landed gentry utilizes these dogs to hunt foxes. On a fox hunt, packs of American Foxhounds will chase the prey while hunters follow on horseback. Hunters will know if a prey is found by the change in the melodious barking of the hounds. Settlers of the New World utilize these dogs to hunt foxes as well. Because of the ferocious nature, the dogs are believed to have been used by the English military commanders to track Indians.

The crossing between English Hounds and the dogs of Irish and French settlers resulted to the development of a new breed - the American Foxhound. A new breed, the American Foxhound was developed.

The American Foxhound, first and foremost is a hunting dog. These dogs would be happiest if they are hunting. This breed is equipped with a sensitive scenting ability, strength and stamina and a strong prey drive. An American Foxhound is an intense hunter, once a prey is sighted, the dog will not stop until the animal is taken. Breed name suggests that the dog is a fox hunter but American Foxhounds hunt other animals as well.That the dog will be highly valued by hunter is a given fact.

American Foxhounds are acclaimed for their intense hunting drives. Although the dogs exhibit a courageous and tenacious temperament when hunting, American Foxhounds have a sweet and gentle personality. American Foxhounds have gained a reputation for being courageous and tenacious hunters but in the company of its human family the dogs turn into gentle well mannered companions. This breed is not a one man dog. This breed that loves the whole family is particularly affectionate and gentle with children.
