How to teach the dog to obey the recall command

By Jerry Welsh

Obedience training can improve the ties between man and dog. A dog that has undergone basic obedience lessons develops into good canine citizen. The pet's ability to do tricks will surely make a dog owner very proud. It is common for dog owners to obedience train the dog to be able to manage the pet's behavior. One of the important basic obedience trainings is teaching the dog to come when called as this can save the pet from a potentially dangerous situation. Many dogs have been injured because they were not trained to obey the recall command.

Teaching the dog to come when called is especially important for dogs that are kept on a leash or in a crate. Being energetic animals, dogs would want to run, jump and play freely. The elation of a dog that was able to break the leash and escape from confinement would be immeasurable. The dog would surely be very hard to catch especially if it was not trained to obey the come command. This kind of situation has caused a lot of dogs to be injured and even killed.

Due to the dog's tendency to follow people, teaching the recall command would not be too difficult. Dogs are in fact called Velcro animals. Dogs though are hunters and noted to be curious animals. The will to heed the master's call will be opposed by the desire to follow an interesting scent. In most cases, the interesting scent will win hands down.

Training the dog to come when called or any other obedience training for that matter is best started when the dog is still young. As always, a calm environment is a most suitable training area as a dog that is not distracted would adapt more to the training. Give the come command while standing a few paces away from the dog.

Expect the dog not to come during your first try thus arm yourself with a toy or a treat to encourage the dog to follow the command. Give the command again and when the dog comes to you praise and hug the pet or give the reward. To prevent the dog from getting bored, the sessions must be short but the training must be repeated several times a day. If the dog has steadily obeyed the command, take the training a level higher by increasing the distance between you and the dog or calling the dog to come while you are in another room.
