How to house train your dog
House training, house breaking, potty training or toilet training refers to teaching the dog when and where to go to the bathroom or to the designated toilet area. In spite of the fact that dogs are well loved by all the members of the family, no one would want to clean the mess that the dog leaves everywhere. The ease or the difficulty of house training the dog will basically depend on the persistence and on the methods used by the dog owner. The success of teaching the dog to do its business on the designated area largely depends on you more than on the dog.
House breaking the puppy is not the responsibility of the breeder. This task that will fall on your shoulders is best started while the dog is still a puppy. Any person that have had the opportunity of living in a home with dog will notice that these animals form habits.
Dogs generally defecate and urinate in the same area. Your job is to prevent the dog from forming the habit of using the carpet or other areas of the home as its bathroom. The dog has to be supervised but busy owners would find this task difficult. The good news is that dogs generally take about a week to establish a routine.
You need to designate an area to be the dog's very own toilet. This can be in the garage, a corner of the bathroom or in the yard. Dogs have to do their business after waking up, after eating and before sleeping thus you can take the dog to the toilet area during these times to eliminate. A pat or a praise given after the dog has eliminated in the correct place will make the dog repeat the good deed again. Dogs that are allowed to roam inside the house can have accidents thus an owner need to know the telltale signs that the dog is about to do its business so that it can be taken to the designated place right away.
Dogs are wonderful and intelligent creatures but unlike other animals, dogs are dependent on the care that will be provided by their owners. Along with the decision to take a dog for a pet comes the responsibility of making the dog a valuable member of the family
