First aid kit for the dog

By Jerry Welsh

In a home where there are children or aging family members, a well stocked medicine chest is a must. Children and older members of the family are often affected with health problems. The medicine chest will ensure that immediate treatment will be given to the injured family member. Dogs and other pets will benefit from a first aid kit too. Due to the inquisitive and energetic nature it is not surprising for these pets to sustain injuries from accidents. A well stocked first aid kit will somehow lessen the anxiety of a pet owner knowing that emergency care will be given to the pet. First aid will stabilize the pet's condition as well as save the dog from pain associated with the injury.

It pays to be prepared for any emergency. When it comes to the care needed, dogs are comparable to babies thus a first aid kit will be very necessary. A medicine kit will be necessary even if a veterinary facility is next door. Running to the every now and then would be a costly habit. Aside from this fact, the vet may not always be available.

With a medicine kit in the house, an owner will be able to administer emergency care even late at night when vets may be difficult to find. Dogs are great companions thus these animals are taken by the master almost everywhere. In the wild or in far flung places where no veterinary facility is nearby, a well stocked medicine kit in the car can save the life of an injured pet.

A dog owner can buy ready made kits or create a customized kit. As expected, the first aid kit of an owner that lives in the city would not be as complete as the kit of an owner that lives in remote areas.

Whether pre-made or customized, a dog's first aid kit should have equipments like scissors, tweezers, a leash and muzzle, a rectal thermometer, cotton balls and swabs. A dog's first aid kit should contain different sizes of bandaging materials. Diarrhea, allergies and infected wounds are common concerns of dogs thus the first aid kit should have antihistamines, antidiarrhea medications, as well as wound disinfectants and antibiotic ointments. First aid kit for dogs must have activated charcoal and hydrogen peroxide as these animals are very curious about their surrounding and because they use their mouth to investigate they often end up ingesting poisonous substances. Lastly, it would be a better idea if the contact numbers of the vet will be written on the cover of the first aid box.
