What is a Rajapalayam Dog

By Jerry Welsh

The regal movements of the dog is not unlike the trotting of a thoroughbred horse. The dog would attract attention because the smooth milk white coat, the golden eyes and the pinkish nose really make the dog attractive. This dog that hails from India is the handsome and regal looking Rajapalayam Dog, a smaller look alike of the Great Dane. A Rajapalayam Dog has a muscular and strong boned body. The dog has a rather loose skin but no wrinkles and dewlaps are formed. The dog may appear to be rather high and mighty because the head is always carried high.

In India, the Rajapalayam Dog also goes by the name Paleiyakaran and Paligar Hound. This breed of scenthound is believed to have existed since the 17th century. During that time hunting boar is a favorite sport of the aristocracy. The heightened scenting ability, the high prey drive as well as the strength are the reasons why this breed of scenthound is a favored hunting companion of the aristocracy. This breed of scenthound is an expert in hunting wild boars and other small animals. The Rajapalayam is indeed a ferocious breed. These ferocious dogs were utilized by the Indians as war dogs that fought against the British Cavalry during the 18th century Carnatic Wars.

There is no question about the excellent hunting abilities of this breed but owners of these dogs often get annoyed by the dog's tendency to get easily distracted. A Rajapalayam that is trailing a prey would suddenly veer away from the trail to follow another interesting scent. The Rajapalayam is a versatile breed and apart from being a hunter, the dog has as well excelled being a home companion and a guard dogs. The massive size of the dog would be enough to intimidate an intruder. With its protective nature and distrust of strangers, owners of these dogs are confident that they will be protected by the pet from intruders.

This dog forms loyalty only to one man. Although the dog will show affection to other members of the family its love and loyalty will be given only to one person. As soon as the favorite person arrives, the dog will ignore other family members. Surprisingly, this tendency to favor one person is lost when the dog is in the company of children. A Rajapalayam Dog has great affection and tolerance for the young members of the family.

A Rajapalayam is a low maintenance breed as occasional brushing will be enough to maintain the good condition of the coat. Rajapalayam Dog owners have to provide the pet with sufficient opportunities to exercise as this is a high energy breed.
