The Mating Ritual of Dogs

By Jerry Welsh

It would be very easy to know if a bitch is in heat. The swollen vulva would have bloody discharge but what would be more noticeable would be the number of male dogs that would hang around the home. The distinct smell emitted by a bitch in the estrus stage will serve as an invitation to male dogs. This distinct odor would attract all the male dogs in the area

Even if the dogs would mate anywhere, a bitch that is not yet ready to be mated would ignore the advances of the suitors. Even if several male dogs would follow the "lady" around, only one will be chosen. When the bitch is ready, it will allow the male to mount by holding her tail to one side giving easy access to her vulva. This action is known as flagging. Once the male dog has mounted from behind, the vulva will be penetrated by the dog's penis. Once penetration is achieved, the male would usually swing one leg to one side until the dogs are tied end to end.

Aside from being tied end to end, mating dogs may appear to be stressed so that owners that have not yet witnessed mating dogs would panic believing that the dog is hurt. It is natural for mating dogs to be stuck end to end and owners must never try to separate them. This is known as the "Tie" or the mating tie.

A dog's penis, unlike human penis, can penetrate the vulva even if it not stiff because it has a bone called baculum that holds it rigid. After penetration, the bulbus glandis, an erectile tissue at the base of the penis will swell with blood. The swollen bulbus glandis will trap the dog's penis inside the vagina so that the mating dogs will not be able to separate from 5 to 30 minutes. The bulbus glandis will return to its normal size after the dog has finished ejaculating. After ejaculation the dogs will be able to separate.

Because leakage of sperm and prostatic fluid are prevented, impregnation is ensured. Any other male dogs that would want to mate with the female would not be given a chance as long as the mating dogs are stuck together thus mating will not be interrupted.
