Choosing The Best French Bulldog Puppy For You

By Flora Vinson

Bred as a companion dog, the French bulldog is small and muscular. A French Bulldog puppy will grow up to be genial and kindly although perhaps a little stubborn. Their most distinctive trait is the ears. These sit up on top of the head like the ears of a bat. Frenchies are suitable for apartment living as they don't bark a lot. The coat is short and rarely sheds. These low maintenance dogs only need an occasional brush.

Pups are best purchased from a trustworthy breeder who loves his dogs. Genetic problems sometimes occur in this breed. A reputable seller will have bred only from healthy dogs.

It is best if you can meet the puppy's parents. Puppies inherit many characteristics from their parents. Healthy parents with stable temperaments are likely to pass these on to their offspring. Adult dogs should not be timid or aggressive.

If possible, see the entire litter at the one time. Some will be boisterous and forward while others will be more reserved. One characteristic isn't necessarily better or worse than the other but a particular individual may appeal to you more.

Excessive hyperactivity or timidity is perhaps best avoided. If you lose your heart to a cringing pup, perhaps he is just off-color. Don't purchase him at that point but ask the breeder to contact you when he is fully well. Any vaccinations which should have been carried out should be documented for you to see.

Healthy pups are full of energy with clean, bright eyes and a glossy coat. There should be no discharge from the nose. A pup should respond in some way to your voice or a noise close to him. French bulldogs have a few congenital problems. You will be able to tell if a pup has a cleft palate or hare lip and the spine should be straight. By choosing carefully, you will have a French bulldog puppy to share your life for the next eight to ten years.
