Australian Shepherd Training: Techniques To Do It Appropriately

By Jennifer Powell

At some point in most of our lives we have owned a dog, and boy is it an enjoyable experience. This is especially true if you have a well-trained obedient dog. Nothing says love like getting pounced on the minute you walk into the door. Hopefully the Australian Shepherd training suggestions in this article can help you to have a loving and obedient dog.

Start your dog training with something that will be simple for your pet to master. Not only will you get the immediate gratification of your success, but also, your dog will gain the important basis of what an acceptable trick or behavior is. This provides you with greater results throughout the training.

One tip to be aware of when training your dog is to use his name properly. This is important because control over your pet is the main concern in training and discipline. Say his name regularly, but just for direct orders. Never call your dog to you if you intend to punishment on him. Along with his name, it is equally important to train your pet recall. To do so, you ought to be the most appealing thing to your pet at the moment you are calling him. Active dogs love movement so try calling your dog while you run in another direction. Your pet will be likely to engage in a chase, making recall an enjoyable exercise for him and encouraging his reaction in future scenarios.

During Australian Shepherd training, discourage negative habits when it takes place. Tell your pet "No" in a firm tone of voice. Never yell and never hit your pet with a hand or other object. Be sure you discourage the bad behavior as it takes place or soon after it occurs. Dogs have short memories. If you wait too long, the dog won't find out what you are trying to tell him. In most cases, giving your dog a small treat every time he does the proper movement is the best reinforcement. Before you know it your dog will be responding instantly to your commands, even without the treat.

To guarantee a well-trained four-legged friend from the start, make sure you practice consistency in everything you do once you bring your new furry friend home. This means discussing all aspects of the dog's care, needs and training with all members of your household. If all family members treat the dog consistently, whether admonishing it or showering it with praise, the dog will learn more quickly and all family members will have the ability to successfully command the dog with ease.
