Physical therapy is a another name for physiotherapy and the abbreviation PT is used commonly. It is a field in medicine that promotes function and mobility as well as remediating bodily impairments by use of mechanical force and movements and manual therapy. Other techniques used to promote mobility include electrotherapy and exercise therapy among others. Medical practitioners who specialize in this field are called physical therapists or physiotherapists. Here are facts regarding Northern VA Canine Physical Therapy.

Physiotherapy aims are addressing illnesses and injuries that affect the ability of a person to move and perform their normal duties. Therapists need to know the medical history of the patient before they can diagnose a condition. Symptoms that one is having should also be explained to ye practitioner. Treatment plan is formulated with the aim of restoring mobility and function.

In most cases, physiotherapy acts as a complementary treatment for other methods of treatment. For example, one may have a prosthesis fixed on a broken hand, but they still see a physiotherapist to help then regain mobility. Physical examinations are usually conducted by physiotherapists so that they can make accurate diagnoses. A treatment plan is usually decided upon based on the diagnosis.

In case physical examination is not enough to reach an accurate diagnosis, other diagnostic tests are usually conducted. Such tests are usually conducted in a laboratory setting, and they include CT-scan, MRI, and X-ray. Usually, the practitioner chooses the test to conduct depending on the symptoms of the patient and medical history. That is why it is important to tell the PT everything there is to know about the condition. In some cases, multiple diagnostic tests may be needed to achieve desirable results.

Electromyograms and nerve conduction velocity testing are among the tests that are performed on rare occasions. Common prescriptions offered by PTs include manipulation, mechanical devices, manual therapy, specific exercises, radiation, assistive devices, prostheses, and orthoses. Other prescriptions that may also be given to a patient are sound waves, electricity, heat, and cold. These are classified under physical agents. Patients are helped out by therapists to engage in specific physical exercises in certain cases. Also, PIs offer specific therapies.

Part of the job involves preventing loss of mobility before it happens. Thus, PTs work with patients who have injuries of medical conditions that threaten their mobility. The elderly also need preventive care to help them retain mobility and independence for the longest period possible. PTS formulate exercise routines that are meant to keep the individuals they work with active. By doing this, quality of life is improved a lot.

There are many specialties in this field. The common ones include sports, neurology, EMG, geriatrics, wound care, musculoskeletal, cardiopulmonary, pediatrics, and orthopedics among others. One of the most rapidly emerging specialties is neurological rehabilitation. Sports physiotherapists work with athletes to ensure that they are in good physical condition at all times.

The range of settings in which physiotherapists work is wide. Some choose to be employed while others are self-employed. Those who are employed may work in outpatient clinics, health and wellness clinics, rehabilitation hospitals, private homes, fitness and sports centers, and schools among others. On the contrary, those who are self-employed receive walk-clients and have a pool of their own clients.
