Basic Pet Supplies For First-Time Owners

By Karen Thomas

Being a pet owner can be very exciting, but also quite daunting if it's the first time. Caring for a living creature is the closest thing to having a child, many have said, and it's actually a very good way to practice taking responsibility in preparation for parenthood! Here are some basic tips on pet supplies that every owner should consider in preparation for the newest family member.

You should have done sufficient research into the type of pet you are getting before it comes into your home. If you are acquiring a special breed of animal or particular species, there are certain needs it may have that might differ from others of its kind. For example, there are some types of dog that are only meant to live in cold places, and so keeping such a dog in a tropical setting would be difficult without a fully air-conditioned home.

Doing the right research into an animal's background will also be of great help in deciding what supplies it needs the most. For example, there are pets that will need more attention to grooming, while others will require their owners to focus on their dietary needs. Knowing these things will help to put a budget in place when it comes to expenses.

Every pet needs food and a place to sleep, as well as somewhere they can relieve themselves. Be it a birdcage, outdoor kennel, basket indoors or aquarium, ensuring the new family member is as comfortable as possible will make for a great start. Designating a bathroom area for the animal will also help if and when toilet training begins.

Give animals like cats and dogs a lot of padding so that they can settle comfortably in their bed. You may know that puppies can get lonely and fussy when night time comes, so making the bed as inviting as possible will help. Consider also if you are willing to put the pet's bedding near its owner in a bedroom at the foot of the bed. Cats like to make their beds by digging with their claws to settle in, so a layered blanket or two will work well.

Birds should have enough space in a cage to stretch out their wings. All animals will need lots of space to move around and exercise daily. Careful consideration should be given to this point, especially if the home has no yard or open area. This is mostly important for dogs, who need to expel the energy and get the workout at least once per day. A good collar and leash will be necessary to walk pets who need to exercise.

Close attention should be paid to what foods a pet needs. Food for pets can be purchased in bulk, but must be stored well so that it remains fresh. Pet containers can be personalized, and heavier bowls for water and food should be used for larger animals.

If you work during the day or the house is empty for any reason, make sure your pet is entertained while you're gone. Toys will also help develop its skills as it grows. Look around at what's available to assist with grooming during play or even toys with added health aspects.
