Discover Adorable Teddy Bear Puppies For Sale

Also called Shichons or Zuchons, Teddy Bear puppies are adorable, sweet, playful, friendly. They're an easy to care for little dog, 11-16 pounds full grown. With a mix of colors and patterns, each is a unique and adorable individual. Zuchons want to please. They're stars in obedience classes. At 11-16 pounds, this little dog is a great choice for apartment and condo dwellers and RV travelers. They bark to alert their pack members, but otherwise aren't too vocal. A stroll around the block, playtime in the backyard, or a visit to the dog park will satisfy exercise needs. But he doesn't do well with a lot of alone time. These gregarious little dogs need to be an intimate member of their human pack.

Teddy Bear dogs are also a great choice for families with children and/or other household pets. They're easy to train and easy to housebreak. They love learning tricks and performing. They're just natural show offs.

Teddy Bears are 11-16 pounds and live 15-16 years. They have a fluffy coat that doesn't shed, making this breed a good choice for those with allergies. They should be brushed regularly to prevent tangles, and the hair should be clipped every 6 weeks. A teddy bear cut is a great choice to make this little dog a real clean and adorable cutie. The large round eyes are another endearing trait.

Some breeders are now creating mini Teddy Bears by crossing a Shih Tzu with a Maltese. They look like their miniature namesake, and have the same endearing personality and looks, but they're tiny, less than 13 pounds. They look and act like puppies all the days of their life.

Both the parent breeds provide healthy stock, so most Zuchons are healthy little dogs. Zuchons do have a short muzzle so they're sensitive to heat. With a mix of Shih Tzu and Bichon genetics, the muzzle is usually long enough to avoid the breathing problems common in the Shih Tzu lineage. Other health concerns to watch for include skin allergies, eye problems, knee problems. They're also prone to dental problems so brush your dog's teeth, feed a top quality dry food, and provide dental chews.

This is a new crossbreed that has only been around since the 1990's. It's not recognized by the AKC, and there are no Teddy Bear registries. Teddy Bear isn't an official designation but usually describes a cross between a Shih Tzu and a Bichon Frise. Other names for this hybrid are Zuchon, Shichon, or Tzu Frise. Sometimes the term is used for crosses including Toy Poodles and/or Yorkshire Terriers. Some may also be 2nd or 3rd generation hybrids.

Since there are no official registries, buyers need to do their research. Puppy mills breed for money with out careful attention to the genetic health or social needs of the parents or the puppies. It's best to visit the breeder to observe the parents and the puppies. Ask what has been done to socialize the puppies. Ask for health records. Ask if there's a health guarantee.
