Facts And Myths About Dog Breeders

By Gloria Gardner

It's a fact that dog breeders in New England love their dogs. They strive to maintain and improve the breed. With knowledge of genetics, parentage is planned to produce healthy puppies with predictable traits and temperaments. They work diligently to produce quality dogs and to place them in quality homes.

Research breeds before shopping. The advantage of buying a purebred is that it comes with known characteristics, high energy or calm, alert or docile. Talk to the breeder before you see the irresistible little fur balls. Discuss your families make-up, habits, energy level, and space limitations.

Responsible breeders sell registered pets of known parentage who have been screened for health defects. Ask if they take back a puppy that develops a health defect. Most will take back any puppy or older dog that the owner can no longer care for, for any reason.

Purebreds do not have more health problems than mixed breeds. Dogs from puppy mills and backyards have more health problems because there's no screening. Registries maintain records of a dogs lineage. Health, traits and temperament are bred for with a high degree of predictability.

Visit with the puppies and the parents. Good breeders generally work with 1 litter and 1 breed at a time. They work diligently to produce healthy puppies. They spend time everyday socializing the puppies so they will be good pets with predictable behaviors.

Pet quality dogs make perfect pets. They're not unhealthy, just too big, too small, wrong coat length, or incorrect markings for a show dog. Sometimes adult dogs are returned because the owners living situation changed. They may be stellar pets well trained with good manners.

Find dog breeders in new england through local kennel clubs, or referrals from obedience trainers, groomers, or vets. Attend a dog show. See a variety of breeds and ask questions. Save the dog and yourself heartbreak by bringing home the right pet for your family.
