Some Of The Best Breeds Of Heritage Chickens

By Juliette Cruz

For most people, chickens are all the same. After all, they all look almost the same especially when they are already served at the dining table. But chickens, like dogs or cats have different breeds and each kind possesses unique characteristics. A group of livestock experts introduced the term heritage chickens to make consumers and poultry raisers aware of what particular chicken they are buying when they see the term on labels or when dealers tell them about it.

They are not grouped into breeds simply for the sake of classifying them. They differ in breeds because they have different characteristics and even personalities even though most of them just look the same.

The Black Pendescana is among these exceptional breed because hens of this kind mature quickly thus they are able to lay eggs early. Black Pendescanas also have good meat but are mostly valued for their extra large eggs. Black Pendescanas are not fond of high places and prefer to rest on branches and fences that are below 3 ft.

Not all chickens are raised for meat or eggs. Some raise them just for the sole purpose of raising them and taking care of them. Like the usual domestic pets, these animals also have personalities and like the Black Sumatra in particular. Unlike most breeds that prefer to flock together, the Black Sumatras prefer to be alone and. They also make sounds that are not usually heard from fowls. Owners just love the mysterious fierce and mysterious stares.

Another breed that owners raise for their looks and elegance are the Ameraucanas. The Ameraucanas resembles the appearance of most doves. These chickens are good natured, calm and timid and like to wander a lot. In just 2 to 3 weeks of age, the Ameraucanas are already able to mate. Also interestingly, they lay pale blue and sometimes greenish eggs.

Another good natured chicken breed is the Silver Grey Dorking. They could be tamed easily and does not run away from people whenever people try to pick them up. Both the Ameraucanas and Silver Grey Dorking are fond of wandering around. Though Silver Grey Dorkings are heavy, it is amazing that they are able to reach places that are up to seven feet high. Silver Grey Dorkings are good egg layers but are more popular for their delicious meat.

If the Silver Grey Dorkings will not try to flee when you try to get near them, the Marraduna Euskal Oiloas will try to get near you even before you try to approach them instead. Chickens belonging from this breed are known for their friendliness. The Marraduna Euskal Oiloas simply loves the attention. But the Marraduna Euskal Oiloas are not just for show, they actually regularly lay quality and delicious eggs.

Aside from the breeds that have been mentioned, there are other breeds of heritage chickens whose behavior and characteristics are not well known yet to many. And there are other exceptional breeds out there for you to discover.
