Why do dogs attack

By Jerry Welsh

Humans spend a lot of their time with dogs and while these animals make wonderful companions, the association can also have fatal consequences when dogs attack humans. Every year more than four million dog owners and non-dog owners needs medical attention for minor to fatal injuries resulting from dog attacks. Dogs have different personalities and while some would be crowned as most congenial pets others noted to have aggressive personalities are trained for protection work. The significant difference dogs made to humans way of life is probably the reason why dogs are branded as man's best friends. After domestication these animals have proven their worth as the affectionate and steadfast companions of man. However, dogs are predators and even a well trained and well mannered home companion will never lose its high prey drive. A situation in the environment will trigger the latent ferocious nature of a gentle dog and the dog will attack.

Dogs' long and strong legs can easily knock people down. The jaws and the needle sharp teeth that can deliver hundreds of pounds of pressure can cause fatal injuries. Dogs are the most popular choice for a pet as these animals form a strong bond with their owners. It is really quite unfortunate that some dogs with aggressive behaviors would mar the outstanding reputation of man's best friends.

What can be the reason why dogs attack humans? Bite and attack situations are often attributed to human behaviors. A lot of dog attack situations involve the dog owner and the pet. It is not uncommon for dog to manifest dominance over what is considered as pack members because these animals are pack oriented. A pet owner may inadvertently allow the dog to be the leader of the pack. Pet owners are advised against allowing a pet to be pushy as this behavior can turn into aggressiveness that will make the dog attack at the slightest provocation.

Dogs are highly territorial. Defending the young, the food and the location considered as its territory is another reason for a dog to attack. An eating dog must never be approached as an attack is possible because the dog will try to protect its food. In a dog's eyes, the family as well as other animals in the household are members of the pack. Because the pet is protective of its territory, the squeals of the playing master will cause the dog to attack the playmates.

Some people can be very cruel to dogs. A dog reacting to a fearful situation can attack. Sweet, loving and affectionate are the common descriptions given to dogs but abused dogs adopted from shelters would still have the tendency to attack due to a fearful or an aggressive temperament.
