Reasons why dogs eat vomit

By Jerry Welsh

Dogs are noted for their hearty appetites. A dog owner would be aware that the pet have the tendency to eat revolting things. Dogs that are provided enough high quality foods would still raid trash cans and eat spoiled food. Another disconcerting habit of a dog is eating feces. Dogs drink water from toilet bowls. Dogs, humans most valued pets have a partiality for vomit.

Humans and dogs have formed a legendary attachment. Dogs have been the most loved pets of man for thousands and thousands of years but in spite of this, dogs would exhibit some behaviors that are puzzling to man. Humans consider spoiled food, feces and vomit as gross but dogs would consider these items as gourmet food.

Studies have been conducted on canine behavior but no definitive reason was given why dogs eat vomit. It was speculated that eating vomit is an ingrained habit that was passed on to present day dogs by their ancestors. The primary purpose of eating the vomit is to conceal the dog's presence from predators. Dogs in the wild need to hide from their predators thus feces and vomit which signifies their presence have to be eaten. The feces and vomit eating habit is a self preservation act of the dog.

Modern day dogs have descended from wolves. Wolves in a pack live together, hunt together and share in the rearing of the young. After feeding on the hunted animal, dogs would return to the den and regurgitate the eaten food to feed the young. Vomit will be viewed by a dog as regurgitated food. Although dogs have been domesticated for so long our furry friends would be inclined to eat vomit every now and then.

As mentioned, dogs are noted for their voracious appetite. Vomit is partially digested food that would have an obnoxious smell for humans but would be very interesting for the dog. Dogs eat repulsive smelling rotten food thus it is more understandable if they devour the still warm vomit.

Eating vomit is not really a dangerous habit of the dog. As long is the vomit does not have toxic substances, it would not really harm the dog. Thus an owner need not worry about the vomit eating habit of the dog. However, consider that fact that dogs are very affectionate animals that also has the habit of giving their human friends sloppy kisses. Stopping the dog from vomiting can be a challenge given the indiscriminate eating habit of the pet but an owner can prevent the pet from eating the vomit by cleaning the mess as soon as it is created by the dog.
