How to remove the dog's ear mites

By Jerry Welsh

Ear mites are one of the parasites that plague dogs. Although microscopic in size, ear mite infestation can easily spread to other pets of the family. Because of the minute size you would never think that an ear mite can cause the dog great discomfort. Imagine what kind of discomfort the pet would suffer from if thousands of these pesky critters are running and feeding on the skin that covers the ear canal.

Ear mite infestation can easily spread as these parasites can be transmitted by an infested pet to another through physical contact. This means that if one pet is infested by these microscopic bugs, the possibility that the infestation will spread to other pets in the household is rather high. Ear mites are barely visible by the naked eye thus a pet owner not accustomed to grooming the pet would not be aware of the infestation until the pet is severely affected.

A dog that is turning around and around may not be trying to please you with its new trick. It is possible that the bizarre behavior of the pet is due to the ear mites on its ear canal that is causing extreme discomfort. Severe infestation that causes the ear to be plugged with ear mites will result to a dog that cannot walk a straight line as commonly the pet's sense of balance is impaired. Severe ear mite infestation can cause the dog to have seizures. Bacterial infection can set in if the dog that vigorously shakes the head and frantically scratch the ears would cause the skin to bleed. Without prompt medical attention, the infection can worsen and result to deafness if the dog's ear drum is ruptured.

Fortunately, this kind of parasite infestation can be easily eradicated. Of course the pet owner has to verify if ear mites are really causing the dog discomfort. One of the telltale signs of infestation are the coffee-ground like discharge found on the surface of the dog's ear canal. The coffee ground like discharge found on inside the dog's ears are actually blood and pus.

One way of removing ear mite infestation is by using mineral oil. With an eye dropper, apply the mineral oil to the ears. By massaging the ears, the exudates will be softened and the ear mites will be killed as well. Some dog owners would use OTC medications. Ear mites are hardy as they can exist for months without a host. To totally eradicate the infestation it would be best to wash the dog's things with hot water.
