How to get rid of dog bad breath

By Jerry Welsh

Dogs are very affectionate animals that have the penchant to give its human family sloppy kisses. However, some dogs have the great turn-off in humans - bad breath. Dogs are well loved pets and because of the strong ties that was formed between the pet and the family, these animals are constantly cuddled petted and kissed. This is why a bad doggie breath can be a major concern for pet owners.

Dogs are feared because of their strong teeth. Dogs have the capability to gnaw and break hard to crack bones because they have strong teeth. With the use of the strong teeth a dog can bore a hole through a concrete wall to escape confinement. However, dogs suffer from teeth, gum and mouth problems too. A periodontal disease can be the culprit that gives the dog a bad breath.

Dogs are indiscriminate eaters thus rotten things will end up in the dog's mouth. The foul breath can be due to bacteria in the dog's mouth. Some dog owners would not mind if the dog has a bad breath especially if the pet is relegated outside the home but this condition should be a cause for concern as bad breath can be a symptom of a serious disease.

Before giving the pet a lot of pet breath mints that would last for about five minutes, why not take the dog to the vet so that a pro will rule out any underlying disease that may be the cause of the bad breath. The vet would usually sedate the pet so that the mouth can be thoroughly examined and the teeth cleaned. Through the examination, the vet will know if the dog has gum problems or if foreign objects stuck between the teeth causes the stench. Dental cleaning would naturally be expensive but as it will be done by a professional you can be sure the pet's teeth will be thoroughly cleaned.

The bad breath of the dog can be reduced if the pet is regularly brushed. Brushing should be made a part of the dog's regular grooming routine. Dogs too like their human friends would get lots of benefits from regular brushing as aside from keeping the breath fresh it will also prevent the buildup of tartar and plaque that causes bad breath. To clean the dog's teeth, use doggie toothpaste and specially designed toothbrush. The dog's bad breath may be due to digestive problems. Some foods given to the dog promote the buildup of bad breath causing plaque. The build up of plaque that is one of the cause for the dog bad breath can be prevented by changing the diet of the dog.
