Contact Reliable Cavachon Breeders for the Healthiest Cavachon Puppies

By Chloe Gib

The Cavachon is what is often known as a 'designer breed'. These cute dogs are a cross between the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Bichon Frise. Crossing two breeds is a bit of a lottery and reputable Cavachon breeders will be endeavoring to breed the healthiest and best tempered dog they can.

Crossing two breeds can result in progeny inheriting any blend of good and bad characteristics from the parents. In this case, the cross seems to have been quite successful. Puppies may not necessarily be from two purebred parents. Multi-generation crossings are used to help 'fix' a particular attribute in the new breed so that it will appear consistently.

The purpose of crossing two breeds is to try to bring together certain attributes in the one animal. With this hybrid, it was hoped that the progeny would be non-shedding and hypo-allergenic. It also needed to be on the small side and to possess an even, gentle disposition.

Pups often grow to a height somewhere near that of their parents. Cavachons vary from 9 to 18 inches at the shoulder and weigh up to 25 pounds. Females don't usually weigh in excess of 20 pounds. As the breed has become more popular, breeders have produced a toy size.

While the parent breeds have a few genetic health problems, the hybrid seems to have less. However owners should check out the parentage of their prospective pet thoroughly. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is prone to mitral valve disease. This can be inherited by the offspring. The Bichon Frise is also susceptible to diseases of the immune system which can be passed on to their progeny.

Puppies come in many colors. The most common is probably peach and white. Solid colors and tri-colors all occur in these cute little dogs. Because of its long coat, it should be thoroughly brushed every few days and needs bathing about once a week. Although the Bichon Frise does not shed and is recommended for those with allergies, most Cavachons shed a little. If you think you might be allergic to dog hair and dander, you should spend some time with your potential pet before deciding to purchase it.

Most Cavachons have very stable temperaments. They are friendly and cope well with plenty of attention and play from children. They get along with other dogs and pets. They are playful and intelligent. Being small they are a good size and well-behaved if trained and socialized while young. The only drawback might be the need to care for their coat properly. And if you contact reputable Cavachon breeders, you can be assured that their Cavachon puppies will be as free as possible of any genetic problems.
