Tips And Techniques For Training Your Dog

By Kirk McGee

Every person who owns a dog wants their dog to be properly trained. The key to knowing how to properly train your dog is education. If you want to have a well-trained dog, you need to educate yourself on the proper dog training techniques. This article contains a number of helpful dog-training tips.

Set your dog up to succeed for the end of a session. End all of your training sessions with a command that you know that he can do and reward him for his effort. You don't want him to come away depressed about training time, but you also don't want to reward him if he was not responding well during the session. Giving him a task or command that you know he can do allows you to reward him without confusing him.

Never cave in to bad behavior. Your dog will always love you, but it needs to know that you're the boss. Don't encourage bad behavior and let your dog know that any such behavior will be met with punishment. At the same time, make sure you reward good behavior as well.

Reinforce desirable behavior from your dog. Don't just rely on treats though. You can reinforce these behaviors through positive attention as well. Petting your dog and talking to him in cheerful tones can be a good incentive too. So can a new squeaky toy or a trip to the park.

Yelling at your dog to stop him from barking can be very ineffective. Instead, try talking calmly to him, and teach him a word that he will associate with quiet. Yelling, to your dog, sounds like you are barking right along with him and so, it can further encourage him to bark.

Some dogs are quite picky about the things that they eat. Find a treat that your dog loves. If he does not really enjoy the treats that you are feeding him for good behavior, he is not going to work as hard to get that treat. Find one that he likes and sticks with it.

Your dog will benefit from having a strong leader. Be confident in your ability to communicate with your dog! You two may speak different languages, but your physical gestures have more meaning than you think. Stand straight during training sessions and always make physical gestures clearly. Your dog will thank you for your clarity with great behavior!

The best way to teach your dog not to beg at the table is to never feed him people food. Don't allow guests or family members to feed your dog from the table. It may look cute, but it will only encourage the dog to continue begging for scraps. Your dog will be healthier and happier if he never learns he can get food from the dinner table.

As was mentioned in the beginning of this article, every pet owner wants their dog to be well trained. In order to properly train your dog, you need to research different dog-training techniques and strategies and educate yourself on what does and does not work. Apply the dog- training advice from this article, and you will be well on your way to having an obedient, well-trained dog.
