Know how to ship your dog safely

By Jerry Welsh

Dogs are one of the animals that pet owners would always carry around. A dog's brand of loyalty, affection and protectiveness is kind of addicting thus it is no wonder for pet owners to carry them wherever they go. In malls, in the park, in the place of work and in any other places - a dog will be seen.

Small breeds of dogs are usually carried in trendy dog carrier bags or in the loving arms of the owner. Pet owners may not carry large dogs but the TLC is very apparent. An owner that is moving to a distant location will find carrying the pet a not too easy task. How can you go about shipping the dog safely?

Shipping the dog by air would be costly but this method would cause the dog the least stress. Airline carriers though have different rules and regulation concerning the shipping of animals. It would be a good idea to contact the airline beforehand rather than simply going to the airport with the dog as some pet shipping services refuse to ship animals when the weather is very hot or very cold.

The dog must be taken to a veterinary facility for a checkup as all airline carriers require pet owners to submit health and vaccination certificates. The vet may also prescribe a sedative that will make the trip easier for the dog. Shipping weak, sick or pregnant dogs must be done with care because of their delicate condition. As the plane ascends, the pressure inside the cargo hold is expected to change as well. Because there are no humans inside the cargo hold, an emergency situation that will happen to a weak dog can have fatal consequences as assistance for the dog will not be given.

Small dogs that travel with the owners can be allowed to stay in the cabin as long as the weight restriction is met and the dog carrier can be stowed under the seat. However, dogs that travel are commonly shipped as cargo. As the crate containing the dog will be placed along with other cargo, it has to be sturdy. The crate must be large enough to allows the dog to move around and to stand and lie down comfortably. The owner's name, address and contact numbers must be written on the side of the crate using a permanent marker. The dog's collar should have identification tags. These information will be vital in reuniting a lost dog with its owners.
