Human Foods that Must Not be Given to Dogs
All dog owners must be aware that not all human foods can be given to the dog. Owners have the tendency to share whatever food is being eaten with the pet. While pieces of bread or bits of hotdog and ham can be used as treats, some human foods must be avoided because of the dangerous effects it would have on the pet.
People love fruits. Loaded with vitamins, fruits are considered as health foods. Some fruits though must be avoided by dogs. Grapes for instance have an unknown toxic substance that when eaten by the dog in large amounts can cause kidney damage. Dogs must not be allowed to eat avocados as well. The dog must not be allowed near an avocado tree as not only the fruit is poisonous but also the leaves, bark and seed. Diarrhea and vomiting will be the outcome if dogs are allowed to eat avocado. Accumulation of fluid in the heart would lead to breathing difficulties and in severe cases, can result to the death of the dog.

Methylxanthines causes vomiting and diarrhea in dogs. Dogs that have eaten these foods become hyperactive. Panting will be noticed because methylxanthines cause the heart to beat abnormally. Chocolate bars in small quantities may cause vomiting and diarrhea but the heart will not be affected but if the pet has eaten large amounts of baking chocolate it is imperative for the pet to have urgent medical attention as this type of chocolate is fatal to dogs.
Fish is for cats and not for dogs thus pet owner should get fish for Garfield and not for Fido. Too much consumption of fish can result to thiamine deficiency in dogs. This condition would cause the dog to have poor appetite and to seize. Severe thiamine deficiency can kill a dog.
No matter how the dog begs refrain from giving the table scraps to the dog. Fish, poultry and meat bones must not be given to the dog as they can lacerate or create digestive tract obstruction. Giving the dog fat trimmings must be avoided as well. Avoid giving the dog table scraps and other greasy people food as the dog can develop pancreatitis, a condition that occurs when the pancreas gets inflamed because of the consumption of fatty foods. Pancreatitis serious condition that can result to the death of the pet as the severe abdominal pain, the depression and the lack of appetite can take a toll on the health of the dog.
