Helpful Tips on Grooming the Dog

By Jerry Welsh

A good looking dog would be the pride and joy of the owner. After all the appearance of the pet is a telltale sign of how it is being cared by the dog owner. Professional groomers can certainly give the dog an overall appearance that has the stamp of professional touch. However, not all dog owners can afford the fees professional groomers charge. The following basic grooming tips is hoped to teach a dog owner how to accomplish the task of grooming the pet easily.

As any dog owner would attest, a dog that is not accustomed to being groomed would make the chore very difficult. Similar to socialization and behavioral training, grooming routines that will ensure the health and the great appearance of the pet must be introduce as soon as the puppy is taken home. It is inherent for dogs to resist capture thus it would struggle and resist being groomed. Restricting the movements of the pet to brush the coat or holding the feet for nail trimming as well as violating the mouth for teeth cleaning will not be appreciated by the pet. The dog will be acquiescent during a grooming session if it was accustomed to the routines while still a puppy.

To make the grooming routine easier, the right tools and supplies must be used. Grooming is necessary for all breeds of dogs but there is no one size fits all grooming tools as dogs have different breed characteristics. The owner has to choose the combs and brushes that will fit the type of fur of the dog. Human grooming supplies like shampoos, conditioners and toothpaste should never be used to groom the pet as they can have ingredients that will not be tolerated by dog.

Short haired dogs need very minimal brushing but long haired dogs have to be brushed daily. Frequent bathing is not for dogs. The dog can be bathed twice or thrice a month so that the natural oils that moisturizes and keeps the skin healthy is not removed.

Daily eye cleaning should be easy as all it takes is to remove the gunk from the eyes with a warm towel. A once a week ear cleaning would be enough for prick eared breeds but droopy eared dogs and those that work in the water must have more frequent ear cleaning. Teeth cleaning must be done once or twice a week. This grooming routine ensures the fresh breath of the pet and also wards off periodontal diseases that would necessitate costly vet visits.
