Dog Stripping

By Jerry Welsh

Grooming is vital in the existence of each and every dog. All dogs need grooming but different breeds have different grooming requirements. Grooming routines of some dogs are too easy to be done in a few minutes while other dogs' grooming routines would be so tedious and time consuming. Dogs are so affectionate they always want to be cuddled and petted but try grooming the ears or the feet and the dog would try to scamper instantly. This grooming difficulty can be resolved by introducing the grooming procedure to the pet while it is still a puppy.

The usual procedures in grooming a dog's coat is brushing, stripping and trimming. Stripping is a coat grooming method done about twice a year on wiry coated breeds like most breeds of terriers, Dachshunds and Schnauzers. Dog breeds with wiry coats have two types of hair - a downy under coat and a coarse top coat. This top coat will be thick, well pigmented and strongly rooted to the dog's skin. This healthy hair follicle though will become thinner and weaker at the end of its life span.

Stripping is the procedure done to remove the roots of dead hairs. If the hair is trimmed the dying root will not be removed and this will certainly mar the appearance and the condition of the coat. Trimmed coat of wiry coated breeds will lose its natural color and its silky texture. Moreover, trimming this kind of coat can be very uncomfortable for the dog as the soft undercoat that takes over the guard hair will cause the dog to itch and to overheat.

Stripping is the process of removing dead hair from the dog's coat using a stripping knife or latex finger cots. This coat grooming procedure can be done by hand, by the processes known as rolling or carding. Hand stripping is a tedious and time consuming job. Even a small dog cannot be stripped in one session. Stripping knives can speed up the process a bit as the groomer can get a good grip on the hair so that more hair will be pulled with every stroke. Hair can be removed by carding , a process that scrapes the coat. Stripping can also be done by rolling the dog's skin with one hand and removing dead skin with the other.

Stripping is usually started when dogs are 6 months of age. The coat is thoroughly brushed before starting the grooming session to remove mats and tangles that would make the process difficult. Although it may appear differently, stripping is a painless procedure thus the owner need not worry that the pet will be hurt.
