Why do dogs sleep at your feet?

By Jerry Welsh

There must be a reason why dog's are known as man's best friends. These animals have provided man with immeasurable affection; companionship and empathy. A dog owner will know that the pet will always be there...always ready to be of help to the human friends. Dogs are one of the most loved pets and dog owners make sure that the pet is not only provided with enough food but also with all the things that will make its life comfortable. Whatever care and affection a dog owner gives to the pet will be doubly reciprocated.

Time and again dogs would prove their affection and loyalty to the human friends. You are probably aware that the pet will withstand any discomfort just to be near you. Consider the dog's tendency to sleep at the feet of their owners. We know how dogs love to sleep. Notice how your dog would grab any chance to have a shut eye. People that love to sleep would invest on big, soft and comfortable beds. Dogs love to sleep but they are not very choosy where they would bed down. Dogs would ignore their comfortable beds if your feet is available to lie and to sleep on if it means being close to their favorite friends.

The desire of the pet to be with you is expected as dogs are very affectionate animals. Because of the pet's tendency to stick close to the master they are dubbed as Velcro pets. You have probably noticed your pet's rather funny habit of leaning on your legs and of stealthily creeping to gain a place in your lap.

Sleeping at the master's feet cannot be a very comfortable position. A dog would not mind the disrupted sleep, the sore muscles and the cricks on the neck as long as it can be close to its favorite person. Sleeping at the master' feet is the dog's way of ensuring that the master is protected. This habit can also mean that the dog is being submissive. Dogs need to have well defined hierarchy. Sleeping at the master's feet means that the dog is being submissive.

Discounting the discomfort the dog owner will feel, this habit is not really dangerous for both the master and the pet. Dog owners would normally let the dog sleep at their feet but what if the dog is a giant breed - would you have the heart to disturb the sleeping pet?
