What are the reasons why dogs sleep all curled up

By Jerry Welsh

Dogs have a reputation for being great sleepers. Breeds of dogs that are often seen sleeping in front of the fire are lovingly nicknamed fireplace rugs by their owners. Dogs have different sleeping positions as while some dogs would lay spread eagled in the middle of the bed, others would take a small portion of the bed. Curled up or lying with the four legs up in the air are other sleeping positions of dogs. Dogs differ in the way they sleep but all of them spend 12 to 14 hours of the day sleeping.

According to psychologists, the different sleeping positions of humans have different meanings. Have you ever wondered why a majority of dogs sleep all curled up? Dog wise people would not need the analysis of dog behaviorists to know the reasons why dogs sleep all curled up. Before domestication, dogs have to survive in the wild on their own.

Dogs would have to wander to find prey and consequently would sleep anywhere. Unlike modern day dogs, there will be no comfortable beds for these animals that would sleep in places open to the elements. The most obvious reason why dogs sleep all curled up is to conserve warmth. By sleeping this way, the paws will be covered by the body and the tail will be used to protect the face from the elements.

Dogs in a pack would stay together. It is necessary for dogs in the wild to stay in a place that would be safe from predator attacks. Dogs would need to curl up to sleep in order to accommodate other pack members in the cramp den. Sleeping together in a cramped place is done to protect the pack from the attacks of predators. By curling up, the dog is protecting its vital organs from the predator's attacks.

After dogs were domesticated, these animals no longer need to fend for themselves. Dog were provided with all the food they can consume and all the things that would make their life comfortable. Pet owners make sure that dogs have comfortable beds. Other pets are even allowed to share the beds of their masters. Dogs are still seen sleeping all curled up. It would be hard for a dog to relax fully if it has to curl up thus the pet will not have a restful sleep. You can encourage the dog to take other sleeping positions to make the dog more comfortable.
