Can Dogs Shed Tears of Sadness

By Jerry Welsh

"Dogs bark, whine and yelp but they don't cry" - this is the common belief of most people. Dogs being animals have no emotions thus they are not capable of crying and shedding tears. Dogs are wonderful animals and it would not be surprising for anyone that had a dog for a pet to want to get another one. If the first pet is gone, another one would take its place. Dogs are cuddled and constantly given attention. Pet owner have all the opportunities to see if the pet is crying because of the attention showered on the pet. Seeing the tears flowing on the dog's face can be difficult as the tears will be readily absorbed by the fur but a loving owner would easily know if the pet is not its usual lively self.

Dogs have tear glands and tear ducts and tearing would be a normal bodily function. Dogs with light colored coats would have tear stains on the face, a sign that the dog really does shed tears. Aside from lubricating the eyes, tears also have the important function of flushing out foreign objects on the eyes

The dog's eyes can be seen brimming with tears. The fur on the face will have tear stains. These signs of crying are explained by scientists as a result of a foreign object on the eyes or as a symptom of an eye problem. Excessive tearing can be caused by a clogged tear duct. Dogs can shed tears but they have no ability to cry because they do not have emotions.

Dog lovers would not agree to the views of scientists. Dog wise people believe that dogs now have many people-like qualities. After years of association with humans, dogs have come to take on a lot of human behaviors.

Dogs are known to form affection and loyalties to their owners. It is therefore not surprising if the dog would show grief at the death of the master. Dogs that have bonded closely with the master are known to grieve just like humans do when the beloved person dies. The pitiful sounds a lamenting dog makes would be heartrending to the other members of the family.

Whether the dog has the ability to feel emotions and to cry when they are sad, or whether dogs can't shed emotional tears, it would still be the responsibility of the dog owner to see what is wrong with the pet. Apart from being lonely, a dog that is crying may have a medical concern that needs to be addressed immediately.
