Dog Training Tips And Other Essential Information

By Margaret Gonzalez

Contrary to what some individuals may think, dog training can be a simple and easy process. Communication between a dog owner and his or her pet is essentially the key to a well-trained dog. It is certainly true that some dogs are much more eager to please than others, and the level of intelligence a dog possesses will vary somewhat from breed to breed, but all canines can be trained.

Pet owners who are not professional trainers, however, usually have a few erroneous ideas concerning how canines learn. For instance, it is not true that certain breeds of dogs cannot be trained, or that the sessions will progress better if the pet is highly intelligent. In reality, the most difficult part of any training program is finding out what will motivate the dog to follow instructions.

When first beginning, it is important for the pet owner to avoid overburdening the animal. Dogs cannot reason the way human beings can, and frequently become frustrated and confused when given too many commands. This is why beginning with simple instructions such as telling the dog to stay or sit is one's best course of action.

It is also essential for the pet owner to realize how important it is to praise the dog, as the latter encourages proper behavior. Rewards should be given when the pet follows instructions, such as doggie treats. The pet will then begin to associate appropriate behavior with receiving goodies and become eager to follow the owner's commands.

There must also be penalties for inappropriate behavior. Such penalties may involve sequestering the pet away from the presence of people for a brief period of time, or simply a jerk of the animal's leash. As long as the punishment is something the dog does not like, it will be effective with regard to discouraging inappropriate behavior.

There are certain pets that do not respond well to training. Often, the source of this problem is the owner's inability to effectively communicate the behavior he or she desires. Individuals who do not realize their approach is failing run the risk of making their dog agitated or nervous. It is always a good idea to change one's approach if it has not been successful.

There is a vast array of benefits associated with having a well-trained dog. Safety is the most obvious of these benefits, as pets that are trained appropriately are less likely to become aggressive with other animals or people, and will generally not wander off into danger. There are no negative aspects associated with the proper training of a pet, and therefore the best time to begin dog training is as soon as one acquires a dog.
