Basic Methods For Successfully Training Your Dog

By Hanna Marry

Training a dog is an endeavor which requires a plethora of patience, but if done correctly is also immensely rewarding. In all my life I have known no feeling like companionship greater than that feeling I have with my two dogs. If you're interested in learning more, read this article.

As you plan out your dog training sessions, focus on only teaching your pet one new skill at a time. Too many instructions and expectations can cause your dog to become confused and frustrated. You will achieve much better results if you work on one skill, achieve mastery and then move on.

Don't let your new puppy sleep on your bed. While it might be tempting to bring a puppy up onto your bed for the night, it's a big mistake! Once they get used to it, they will refuse to sleep anywhere else. Also, remember that the small puppy that only takes up a small amount of space will grow very quickly. Every dog needs its own personal space, as do you!

One of the first things most people teach their dogs is the sit command. This is very basic but is handy for your dog to know, especially when you want to get his attention. One way to teach your dog to sit is to take a piece of dog treat and hold it about six inches from his nose. Slowly raise the treat straight up and say "Fido, sit". You may have to use your hand to help him into the position until he realizes what you want.

Find out what motivates your dog as a training reward, and save it for training sessions to get maximum results. Some dogs love a chance to chew on a special squeaky toy or ball, while others adore a certain brand of treats or tiny chunks of fresh baked chicken. It never hurts if the dog is a little hungry so the treats seem even tastier.

Dogs should have a chance to exercise every day. The top mistake many dog owners make is giving their dogs inadequate exercise. The fact is that a hyperactive dog will have a hard time focusing, much like a child who has had many sweets. Exercise your dog thoroughly every day to maximize your success in training sessions.

When you are training your dog and establishing your leadership role, do not be adverse to letting the dog lick you on the face. This is common behavior in dogs when dealing with the Alpha in the pack. Do not discourage this behavior as it can confuse the animal and confuse your role because you do not show proper response to this servile behavior.

Spend time each day training your dog, even if for only a few minutes a day. Dogs respond well when they get to practice what they are learning and what they have learned. Practicing at least 15 minutes a day on commands your dog already knows keeps the dog in practice.

Although many pet owners are against crate training there is quite a bit of merit in doing it. Many dogs like to have a place they can consider their own and they will never lose track of that place. This will help them with separation anxiety and surprisingly with potty training.

After reading this article you should be a little more prepared to tackle the task of training your dog. Take the tips and tricks you have learned from this article and apply them to a basic routine that is the same every time you work with your dog. Although it may not be the easiest task in the world, training your dog is of great benefit to him, everyone he comes in contact with and more importantly it will really enable you to enjoy life more too!
