Things To Consider When Buying Cat Scratch Posts

By Flora Vinson

Scratching is an urge cats naturally would have in the course of their lives. It is an activity that often causes headaches among owners who deal with damaged doors or furniture. If you are one of these owners, better consider buying cat scratch posts.

Cats usually use scratchers to condition claws. These materials usually come in different styles. Some owners prefer plain poles attached to sturdy bases. Others go for the cat trees that allow the animals to climb, explore, or rest.

Owners have a lot of things to consider before buying these equipments. One would be the material they are made of. For cats that enjoy scratching carpeting or wooden furniture, upholstery would not be a good option. One that is made of sisal or hemps would be a much better choice. Other materials available are wood or cardboard.

Size is another essential consideration before a purchase. Owners must ensure that posts are tall or long enough for their cats to stretch on. For homes with limited space, scratching materials can be designed to slip in corners or over doorknobs. However, they must be sturdy enough to not fall over while in use. Those that have broad bases or lie along floors are best used to ensure this.

Cats are not expected to immediately be excited with the presence of scratchers. Thus, homeowners should exert in efforts to encourage the usage of these materials. One strategy would be to place a scratcher near the lounge or sleep area of the pet. Another would be to use catnips and treats. When a pet finally gets comfortable with the gear, it can now be moved to a more convenient location.

Owners should be observant with regards to the scratching positions preferred by their pets. Those who always go for the carpeting should be given a horizontal post. On the other hand, those who have the habit of scuffing ends of a sofa should be bought a post that is vertical.

Scratching is a very essential activity for cats. It aids them in the development of muscles, eventually turning them into supple creatures. By setting up cat scratch posts, owners would be giving their pets a chance to exercise and improve their natural features.
