What You Should Know When Training Your Golden Retriever

By Edward French

Dogs, unlike humans, need to learn in different ways. Dogs don't have human values, meaning that they don't operate with the principle of right or wrong. They operate on a principle of response instead and are the actions you give them will be their guide. If their actions lead to a negative response from you, then they know that what they are doing is wrong and will avoid doing that type of behavior.

If your dog did something right, then praise him. If he responds to your gestures, does well, and listens to your voice, then reward him with a praise or treat. Let him know that what he's doing is good so that it will lead to a positive response.

But don't reward him and give him a stern NO if he's not listening or doing the exact opposite of what you say. If he did something wrong, don't laugh at him. He will think he has made you happy and keep doing it. He'll be very difficult to train then.

The most important factor in training your Golden Retriever is timing. Dogs don't have a long memory and you need to keep this in mind. Your should correct him at once if he's doing something wrong. If you do, then you may be sending the wrong impression. In order for your Golden to know what he's doing wrong, you should correct him right there in then.

Before it gets worse, you want your Golden Retriever to stop his habit of chasing cars. The second you see him doing this, you should always stop him and let him know he's wrong. Chasing cars is something he shouldn't be doing, and he'll realize this. Hold your ground and continue to correct him when he's doing something you don't like but take note that it may take a bit of time for him to realize this.

This theory is just like praise. Praise your Golden Retriever when you see him doing something right. He'll assume you're praising him for stopping if you don't instantly praise him and wait until he's stopped. To be on the safe side and get the most from your Golden, you should always praise him when he is behaving in the right way, and correct him when he is behaving in a negative way. Do not wait until he has stopped and is doing something else.

If you take your time and show patience with your Golden Retriever, you shouldn't have any problems training him. The training would be worth it in the end even if the process would take some time. Your Golden will react to what you say once you've trained him and avoid doing things he's been corrected for. Training is essential for Golden - and will make him a much better dog when he grows older.
